Final Course Reflection
For this semester in MADT 307: Technology and Communication, we've covered a variety of topics from radio and Digital Signage to current technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality. Throughout this semester, we learned about each topic's history, development, and how its used today. This blog post aims to reflect on the learning objectives outline in the text below from the Final Exam Canvas page for the semester of Spring 2025.
Course Content Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Learning Objective 1: Understand and communicate current trends in communication technology
- Understand and communicate current trends in communication technology
- Understand and demonstrate the use of several theoretical approaches to studying communication technologies
- Understand and communicate the role of political, policy and economic factors in the creation, use, abuse, success and failure of communication technologies
- Be able to critically examine and communicate the role communication technologies play in our lives and society at large
From this course I was able to learn about how consumer trends in the market can influence the development of technology, some more than others. This is clear with the massive undertaking in developing, and continuously improving Artificial Intelligence. Other topics that are dependent on trends for development are Digital Signage and Social Media. Developments included: adding features that made the usage of Digital Signage more seamless with wireless display updates and updates to Social Media apps to allow for a variety of use beyond sharing thoughts and photos.
Learning Objective 2: Understand and demonstrate the use of several theoretical approaches to studying communication technologies
Theoretical approaches we learned throughout this course was focused primarily on research methodology to gather sufficient and relevant data to better understand the topic and the impact the technology has. The best example of this was our Market Research Brief, where we chose a topic as a team and did individual research into the technology. This was typically composed of financial costs for development, statistics on the demographics of users, and existing programs that accomplish a similar goal with the same technology.
Learning Objective 3: Understand and communicate the role of political, policy and economic factors in the creation, use, abuse, success and failure of communication technologies
In our research project, we noticed first hand the policy and economic factors that can influence the development for certain technologies like broadband internet. Other fields of communication technology like Artificial Intelligence, eHealth, and Social Media can fall under similar influence. It's important for us, as consumers, and for developers to know the laws and policies of their field so that we are able to create a technology that is beneficial for consumers and abides by the law for consumer protections.
Learning Objective 4: Be able to critically examine and communicate the role communication technologies play in our lives and society at large

Communication technology is a broad topic that is engrained in everyday life as we continue to integrate digital communication and electronic devices into our everyday lives. From cars to hospitals, we interact with technology that continues to develop for better and seamless access and interaction. Knowing this, it is crucial that we remain aware of how certain technologies, notably media sources on Social Media, Television, and Radio, can be prone to pushing a certain rhetoric and bias. To combat this, we have to do our part in remaining aware of these influences and apply critical thinking to avoid falling for bait content.
